Character virtue can be described as the difference between virtue and vice. Virtue is the right decisions that a person can make, and a vice is a repetitive bad decision. The goal of the virtue of ethics is to achieve happiness by making right choices and having a particular attitude that promotes happiness that comes from deep within a person's soul.

Real happiness cannot be achieved by winning a car or by getting lucky, for this type of happiness comes from learning how to make the right choices in life. To add, making good decisions is a skill that can be obtained if practiced.

  1. When these attributes are combined, they bring about change in the world.
  2. For instance, a bodybuilder would need to consume much more food than somebody who sits at a desk all day staring at a computer screen.
  3. Rita becomes aware of Phil's good character and intellectual characteristics and falls in love with him.

In other words, one must find a middle ground that balances their behavior that leads them to being virtuous and happy. For example, knowing how much food to eat by not eating too much and not eating too little, which this is based on individuality because it depends on how many calories a person burns in a day.

For instance, a bodybuilder would need to consume much more food than somebody who sits at a desk all day staring at a computer screen. Therefore, it depends on a person's individual circumstance that determines how much is too much and how much is too little.

Intellectual virtue is learned in an intellectual process, meaning one can learn to be courageous, but also must know why it is important to have such characteristics. Intellectual virtue can be broken down into five categories. When these attributes are combined, they bring about change in the world. For example, learning to play an instrument is an art and a skill that changes the world with sound.

For instance, knowing not to sleep with multiple women just because it is possible and understanding why this is wrong, which leads to a just decision not to take advantage of a situation.

For example, when trying to find the hypotenuse of a triangle one must first know and understand a triangles formula, which is an example of nous. However, one must also know how to calculate correctly to get the hypotenuse, which can be referred to as Esteme.

Moving on to friendship and what it means to have a virtuous relationship with a person. The second type of friendship is focused on pleasure and is where both people are attracted to each other for their charm, or dashing appearance; a person's good qualities. The third type of friendship is focused on the goodness of each other and is where both people respect one another for their goodness, and they strive to help each other to be the best person possible.

Now to discuss how Bill Murray's character, Phil, learns to be virtuous throughout the film. At first Phil has a rough start, for he decides to take advantage of his situation by eating whatever he desires, driving like a drunken maniac, and sleeping with multiple women. These are examples of poor character qualities because Phil has decided to choose vice over virtue and is going overboard instead of finding a balance that allows him to have a good character.

At this point, Phil comes to terms with the reality of his bazaar situation and takes a dramatic turn in character by deciding to help the people of Punxsutawney.

For instance, he saves a kid from falling out of a tree and breaking his arm, changes a tire for some older ladies and saves a man from choking to death. To add, Phil spends a good bit of time learning to play the piano, and he also learns how to carve ice sculptures. He does this to impress Rita and out of the pure goodness of his heart. Once Phil attempts to pursue Rita in a romantic way, his relationship with her turns into a pleasure based experience because they both drawn to each other due to sexual attraction. However, this is not enough to make their relationship flourish. After Phil is inspired by Rita to become a better person, his relationship with her turns into a virtues connection because now they are both bring out the good in each other.

Not only did Phil's relationship flourish, but so did his character, for he learned to have virtues characteristics on his peculiar journey through groundhogs day.
