So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire. Now the concept of signal fire here is very symbolic.

It is a symbol of hope; A hope that the boys will return to civilization. They symbolism of fire in lord of the flies essay the desire to be rescued. As long as the fire is burning, it shows that they are eager enough to return back to their homes.

They are all thinking rationally at first. How can we ever be rescued except by luck, if we don't keep a fire going?

Is a fire too much for us to make? How many are we? And yet we can't keep a fire going to make smoke. Can't you see we ought to-- ought to die before we let the fire out? Only Ralph, Simon and Piggy had some common sense left in them and they knew how important it is for them to keep the fire burning. It shows human nature how quickly they can embrace a different lifestyle. By spending too much time on the island, they get used to the wilderness and the uncivilized form of life. And they don't care. And what's more, I don't sometimes. The boys become so sadistic and brutal that even kills their own friends. Simon and Piggy are killed, not by accident, but deliberately.

The fire represents hope to be rescued but it is also a symbol of destruction. You lose control over it and it will burn all around and will kill you. We can also take fire as a symbol of power. Allegorically, fire represents power in the myth of Prometheus, who stole fire from the gods and gave it to man.

When Jack and the hunters steal the fire, as Prometheus does in the ancient myth, the evil and destructive power of anarchy is symbolized as Jack and the sadistic Roger gain control of the boys. The resulting regression to savagery is symbolized by the fire that sweeps the island, "burning" away the vestiges of society and threatening death to Ralph.

Beneath the capering boys a quarter of a mile square of forest was savage with smoke and flames. He is very injured and they try to smoke him out by setting fire by the place where he is hiding. They are chanting words like, "Kill the beast. In chapter 2, when the fire gets out of control and causes destruction and death, it shows the how careless humans can be. It shows the mishandling of human resources. This event in the novel can be referred to the destruction of areas in Japan by atom bombs in World War II.

Thus the novel is very much close to reality as well as influenced by the reality. The fire plays a very important role throughout the novel. It shows how fire can help as well as kill. The fire shows us how we should not give up no matter how hard things get. As the boys lost their interest in being rescued, they let the fire go out. They turned into uncivilized brutes as there is an inherent evil present in all human beings.

It's a constant struggle as to which one will win. And one cannot exist without the other. In Lord of the flies, Golding uses different symbols to show the good and evil in the novel among which one is that of the fire.

They got rescued because of the fire so it plays an important role throughout the novel but their friends got killed due to the fire too which shows the destructive and savage side of fire.

The very usage of symbolism implies that lord of the flies is a modern novel thus fire is used as a modern element.
