Compare and contrast gilgamesh and genesis floods

The water is covering the whole entire world swallowing every living creature from human to insect into the abyss of wet darkness during the Great Flood.

During my reading of The Epic of Gilgamesh and Genesis I found that there are definitely some similarities between the flood accounts in The Epic of Gilgamesh and Genesis; however, there are some differences as well. I plan to discuss the similarities and the differences between these two accounts, what I thought of the YouTube Clip concerning the different flood accounts, and why I think people are so interested in the Flood.

First, I would like to discuss the similarities and differences between the accounts of the flood in The Epic of Gilgamesh and Genesis.

  1. They both describe the coming of the flood due to the wickedness of man and a chosen person being forewarned of the coming flood. Noah sends out a raven, then a dove, to test whether the floodwaters have receded enough to show land.
  2. Yet most significant is the greater fidelity of the Hebrew account. The Epic of Gilgamesh is believed to contain accounts which have been altered and embellished over the years by people not following the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
  3. The survivors in The Epic of Gilgamesh are Unanapishtim, his wife, and one of every skill and trade. In both accounts, samples from all species of animals were to be on the ark, and birds were used after the rains to determine if flood waters had subsided anywhere to reveal dry land.

They both describe total destruction of the world by massive flooding and both describe survivors through way of an arch or boat including male and female of each creature. They both describe the main survivor sending out birds to see if the waters had receded.

  • In The Epic of Gilgamesh, Utnapishtim is similarly instructed to build a boat, by one of the gods, Ea;
  • These mountains are about 300 miles apart.

They both describe the coming of the flood due to the wickedness of man and a chosen person being forewarned of the coming flood. They both are perched at the top of a mountain. Although these two works are very similar, they are just as different. The survivors in The Epic of Gilgamesh are Unanapishtim, his wife, and one of every skill and trade.

  • Second, I am going to discuss the YouTube clip discussing the different flood accounts;
  • These Chaldean tablets, from the city of Ur modern-day southern Iraq , describe how the Babylonian God Ea decided to end all life except for the ark dwellers with a great flood;
  • In the Bible, Yahweh decides to destroy the earth with floodwaters because the earth has become corrupt and violent;
  • They both describe total destruction of the world by massive flooding and both describe survivors through way of an arch or boat including male and female of each creature;
  • In the Bible, Noah is told to build an ark, a type of boat, out of cypress wood;
  • If the flood was an actual event, it could answer a lot of the questions people have about mortality and religion.

In Genesis the survivors are Noah, his wife, his sons and their wives because of their wholesomeness. How fast would you like to get it? We'll occasionally send you account related and promo emails.

  • In the Epic of Gilgamesh, the council of gods decides to exterminate all life on earth because of how noisy and crowded the earth had grown;
  • In The Epic of Gilgamesh, the arch was a cube and in Genesis the arch was 300 cubits in length, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits in height;
  • In The Epic of Gilgamesh, Utnapishtim is similarly instructed to build a boat, by one of the gods, Ea.

In Genesis it rained for 40 days and 40 nights. In The Epic of Gilgamesh it rained for seven days and seven nights.

The Flood of Noah and the Flood of Gilgamesh

In The Epic of Gilgamesh, the arch was a cube and in Genesis the arch was 300 cubits in length, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits in height. Second, I am going to discuss the YouTube clip discussing the different flood accounts. I thought this clip was very informative and affirmed my beliefs on the similarities and differences.

Some people challenge the validity of the flood accounts but I believe there must be some truth to it if so many accounts have been described all across the world throughout the ages. I think this is because people are curious about where we came from and why we are here.

If the flood was an actual event, it could answer a lot of the questions people have about mortality and religion. People are also afraid of the possible end of the world and life as they know it. In closing, I have discussed the similarities and differences of The Epic of Gilgamesh and Genesis, the YouTube clip that shows the similarities and differences, and why I think people are so fascinated by The Flood. I hope you have a new born curiosity in trying to discover the secrets of the possibility of a Great Flood.
